Thobe for Life Project

The Palestinian Dress (Thobe) project was established in 2011 in an effort to preserve and promote the original embroidered patterns on the dresses of each city and village in Palestine in particular and some dresses from the region.

The authentic embroidery motifs on these dresses date back to 80 - 150 years, which we hardly ever see in the market today and which was the drive behind the launch of such project.

On the Palestinian dress, each motif tells a story, not a single embroidered pattern comes random. Each symbol and design are a depiction and representation of the history of its people, their beliefs, traditions, stories, environment, mythology and their historical development throughout the years.

Through this project we aim at preserving these original designs as they have been passed down to us from our grandmas and their mothers before them, without modern fashion influences.

Each thobe/dress is hand embroidered by women from Palestinian refugee camps and underprivileged neighborhoods in Jordan, and by purchasing a dress you will be supporting those women in sustaining the needs of their families. More than 40 women work on this project today where 85% of the proceeds go directly to the makers of each dress.

Each dress is made of natural material locally sourced from vendors in Jordan and each piece requires around 50-60 days to be complete by hand without the use of any machinery

In this shop, you will be introduced to each of those dresses, the city and village of origin and the story behind the embroidered patterns of each individual thobe.

Wearing a dress, not only will you be supporting families in need, but also playing a part in preserving and promoting the rich culture and history of Palestine.
